Belize is situated in a subtropical latitude and therefore is usually very warm
and humid. Temperature will vary according to proximity to the coastline, the
mitigating efects of the northeast tradewinds off the Caribbean sea, and altitude.
Temperature are usually higher inland during the daytime but at night times
become pleasantly cooler. It is much more accurate to say that Belize's seasons a
nd climate are marked more by differences in humidity and rainfall than in temperature.
As mentioned above, Belize's seasons are best described as sunny and dry, however
there is a notably difference in the average rainfall in the north and south. Average
rainfall in the north and west is usually around 1,350 millimeters while in the south,
it us as much as 4,500 millimeters.
No discussion on Belize's climate can be complete without mention of Hurricanes.
Although the hurricane season is oficially between July and November, the danger
zone for Belize is September and October. Belize has an efficient warning system
for hurricanes and a network of shelters.
Though mentioned above, that Belize's seasons are marked by differences in humidity
and rainfall rather than temperature, we should note that usually in December and
January, temperatures can be lowered to as low as 12 degrees celcius caused by cold
fronts which are pushed down from the north, so if you visit during this time, you
may want to bring along a jacket.
